Re-programming Series – Your daily affirmations – part 1

brain self talkThis is the next part in the my brilliant kidz re-programming series and the first in the self talk mini series.

Most people have not heard affirmations, self talk or incantations or know what they are. We thought it would be important to give our readers an overview of this useful but little known technique.  You do, however, need to remember that this is a technique to help re-program yourself, and in order for it to work, the nature of this technique is that it has to be applied repeatedly, consistently and needs to be reinforced. The good news is that once you have set it up (which does not take long), the whole technique takes 5-10 minutes, meaning that you can repeat it as many times as you like and almost anywhere.

Why do we need to do this? The answer is to improve ourselves in order to create a daily positive environment that our kids can copy the good and the positive from, giving them a greater opportunity to excel and be brilliant kids. A small change in our daily lives can have a huge impact on our children!

Put simply the effect of these small changes can change the status from a position of “Rubbish in, rubbish out” to “quality in, quality out”, from a stressful situation to a less stressful one. If you imagine driving and someone tries to race you at the lights, this can make the difference between staying calm and carrying on your way, or getting caught up and racing, getting booked and regretting it afterwards and paying a fine plus penalty points on your licence. I hope you see the point now.

You achieve this with your tongue – through self talk, daily affirmations and incantations, and then reinforcing this other techniques.

When you “self talk”, your brain’s sub conscious ‘listens’ – actually it is listening all the time – the more it listens, the more it believes.

Think about this. If 1 person tells you are wrong – there is less of an impact than if 100 people told you that you are wrong. The chances are that they maybe correct in their assessment, and therefore you are more likely to believe them. This is your brain and sub conscious believing the 100 people.

You can now use the same principle to re-train your brain to believe that you are what you wish to be or that you do will not act in a particular way. Through your self talk you are telling your brain this repeatedly, until it starts to believe. When this happens, thought processes and habits will start to change.

So how do you go about creating a program for yourself. Your self talk should be about your goals, your desires, what you want to become, what habits you want to change and must be positively motivated.

Now you have a better understanding of what self talk is and how it works, and the impact it can have in helping our excel and becoming brilliant, we will look at how to create the program in the next article.

Re-programming Series – How to start the change

This is the third in the Re-programming series of articles. We have already talked about what the importance of programming is, how is formed, and why we need to re-programme ourselves.

In this article, I want give you hope that change is possible and not difficult, and can be initiated by taking 5 simple steps by spending at least 5-10 minutes each day on these activities.

If you are right handed and lost your right hand, do you believe you could learn to use your left hand? Yes of course, people re-learn and re-program themselves all the time. If you lose your job, social services may well request you learn new skills or ‘re-skilling’ as they sometimes call it.

How does this work? REPETITION! The key here is repetition – practice using your left hand – this is the only way to build new pathways in your brain – and let’s face it, this is the way you built them in the first place, without ever realising it. This is certainly not rocket science!

Humans are so built that nature gave us complete control over the material, information or data that we allow to reach our sub conscious….but few of us ever exercise this control. So the result – rubbish in, rubbish out – and why most of our programs are the wrong ones, and why we Humans, above all, have the most outstanding ability to change and adapt….if we apply ourselves.

I am going to recommend these 5 steps to help you start the process of change :-

1. observe and listen to yourself – and question yourself – you will soon start to recognise the wrong programs. Make brief notes of what you did each day to identify your habits. Do this in the first week.

2. start breaking your thoughts, habits – stop them from completing – put up a road closed sign. Write them down first to recognise what they are, and than think about how you could have done it better – analyse. Do step 1 and 2 in the second week.

3. start re-programming yourself – you do this with your tongue – through self talk, daily affirmations and incantations, and following this through with actions. Your self talk should be your goals, your desires, what you want to become, and must be positively motivated. We will be posting an article on this and how this can also benefit our kids greatly.

4. change your environment – seek out new people and groups moving in the same direction as you – you are the company you keep. Take out the floppy disk with the old programs and load a CD with new programs to replace them with.

5. Have total faith – that it will happen and in the knowledge the many before you have already achieved change. Look Bill Gates, Mother Teresa, Richard Branson and many others.

You will need some tools to help you do this:

  1. notepad, diary or MP3 recorder, or some other form of note taking
  2. a plan – draw up a daily plan to earmark your 5-10 minutes and what step you will be taking.
  3. most important – be consistent! Take small steps.

I sincerely encourage you to enter, with total faith, into a new world …. of vision, ambition, fulfilment, attainment, happiness, full of positive energy, beauty, let a state of grace fill your mind and soul …..once you start on this process, you will join the 4-5% of the population who have made a decision to reclaim their destiny, and by doing so have change the destiny for their children without ever realising it.

This is the real legacy that you leave behind for your children.

Re-Programming Series – Why you should Change?

So why should you change? Or should you change?

Ok let’s imagine you are going on a plane to Hawaii for a holiday and you are all excited. The plane is in the air, and about half way to Hawaii, you hear the co-pilot over the PA system saying to the pilot – “Captain, we have a problem with our on-board computer – 80% of computer programs the wrong ones”.

What would you do? What would you think? Do you believe that you could reach your destination, or more likely, believe, that you will land in the sea, or worse, crash?

Behavioural researchers have estimated that the 70-80% of our ‘programs’ are simply the wrong ones.

If you ever wondered why you do not seem to be making progress in life or feel you are going backwards, and cannot seem to make ends meet or feel held back, or that it is just unfair. … Well, you now have some understanding why this is.

Life is like a mirror – you get back a reflection of how you see yourself. Your thoughts, attitudes and habits shape this view.

Now imagine this, how easy it to copy files from one computer to another? Very easy – once done the new computer has the exact copy of the file on the original computer. Now imagine you have a virus on your computer. This will also get copied to the new computer, and cause the same havoc. Using this analogy, this is what happens to with our children – we simply copy all our ‘programs’ to them – you can now see how children will pick up habits from you – both good and bad. In addition, they copy the programs out there – from teachers, friends, relatives and any other capable medium, such as TV and radio.

If you can weed out the bad ones, and replace them with good ones, the chances are that your children will pick them up.

You only live once, and when you put that into perspective and compare this to say the age of the universe, your life is an eye blink – so why not make it worthwhile and leave a good legacy?

Re-Programming Series – What is ‘Programming’ And How is it Formed

This is the next part of this series of articles.

Let’s define programming first

“It is the mixture of your attitudes, thinking and habits that make you who you are today and have determined how much progress you have made to date and where you will go in the future.”

These habits and responses are formed from the day you are conceived. They are learned through observation, trial and error, education and your feelings through these experiences.

Now imagine that you have just bought a brand new powerful computer. The computer has memory, a processor, input points, and output points. You load software to run the computer and are either taught how to use it or very often learn by trial and error. How you use these programs is different to the next computer user, and therefore the results are also different. The computer operates using electrical impulses. All tasks are converted into an electro magnetic form – all computers have this base process, how it is used by the each user is very different. The computer chip has many pathways and switches or “junction boxes” – a different result will mean different pathways and junction boxes are used.

Now let’s use this analogy and apply it to us – we can think of human beings as very sophisticated electro chemical processors – we run on electro-chemical signals – all our inputs are converted into electro-chemical form and all our outputs are converted from electro-chemical form.

These electro-chemical signals travel from one brain synapse to another – brain synapses are switches or junction boxes – the signals travel one junction box to another. There are billions and billions of these junctions or switches in your brain. They form bridges or connections through continued use.

Now imagine that you are standing in the middle of an empty green garden or an empty field. When a child is born, this is the state of his or her brain.

There are no pathways to anywhere. Once you start walking, small pathways form, the more often you walk on these pathways, the more definite these pathways become. They then become small roads, than large roads, then a dual carriageways, then motorways, and eventually, some will become super highways. The roads you take most often are the strongest pathways in your brain become your brain – these become your thought processes, attitudes and habits.

When they so strong, they then sit in our sub conscious and become our automatic responses, the responses we make without thinking. This is our ‘programming’ or our conditioning.

The next time you react without thinking, stop yourself and think about it – you have just caught one of your automatic responses. Once you have identified it, do you than know if this response is a good one or a poor one? Do you know where you learned this from? Remember that this is what our children copy and learn from.

The next article in this series will talk about the types of ‘programming’.

Why You Should ‘Re-Reprogram’ Yourself First!

stressful living“All men are born equal… but leave this earth unequal.  A man’s altitude in life is determined only by his attitude in life”

Your children will copy what you do, say and how you think. Any good habits will be copied along with any bad habits. What you do now may not be the best things you want for your kids to learn, and may be the wrong habits that they pick up. This will hinder their success.

In order for your kids to be successfully brilliant, you need to lead by example and put in front of them the positive things – habits, ideas, thought processes, behaviours, speech …. that they can copy, interact and learn from. This will make the task so much easier, if your children are interacting with the positive things on day to day basis as a normal part of their lives.

In order to do this, we as parents need to shed some of the emotional baggage that we all carry and make the effort. After all if we are living a life full of positives, our kids will do the same and whole raising kids’ effort becomes far more enjoyable and far less stressful. Let’s face it – it is through this stress that we tend to do things without thinking, believing that this will lead to a less stressful situation. Instead, the opposite seems to happen – stress creates more stress in our kids and it comes out, which in turn creates more stress in us as parents – a vicious circle!

We need to make a small effort daily to create this change – small steps at time.

I am starting a series of articles on making this change by “re-programming” or changing yourself.

These are next articles in this series over the next few days.

1.      What do I mean by ‘programming’ and how is it formed

2.      Why should you change

3.      How to start the change

By the end of this you will see and understand what programming is and how this will affect your kids. If you can change your ‘programming’, it will be copied to your kids.
